Q. What is the status of the planned replacement of Wollman Rink in Prospect Park and the associated landscaping changes, and how can the progress be followed going forward?
A. One can follow the history and the progress of the park’s Lakeside Center project on the Web site of the Prospect Park Alliance, the nonprofit group that operates the park and is restoring it in partnership with the city.
As part of the 26-acre project, the Wollman winter-only ice rink is being replaced with a year-round center; five acres will be added to the lake; and the shoreline is being brought closer to the original plans of the park’s designers, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.
About 85 percent of the necessary financing has been raised for the Lakeside project, Eugene J. Patron, a spokesman for the park, said in an e-mail in July, noting that construction had started in 2009 on the landscape portion, and in 2010 on the new building. “The old Wollman Rink has been torn down, and construction on the new facility is moving along nicely,” he said. “Expected completion date is winter 2012-13.”
