In order to complete the pedestal and base for the Statue of Liberty, a gift from French Freemasons, the city of New York allowed people to pose on torch for 50 cents, which was a lot of money in those days. Here’s a photo of it that was taken in Madison Square Park between 1876-1882.
The Statue is about to take a year long break starting on October 29th for a $27.25 million dollar renovation,
